The massive increase in the global illicit trade of products such as alcohol and pharmaceuticals is leading to lost fiscal tax revenue, public health and safety issues and intellectual property violations. This poses a difficult challenge to governments, who are now turning their attention to the security of, in particular alcohol and pharmaceutical secure supply chains as a way to combat the effects of global illicit trade. They have started to impose anti-counterfeiting, anti-diversion and anti-smuggling control mechanisms that include security excise tax stamps and security banderoles, authentication features, and secure track and trace systems for tobacco, alcohol and pharma product tracking from point of manufacture to final point of sale.
