New Treaty Requires Track and Trace Systems

New Treaty Requires Track and Trace Systems to Combat Illicit Tobacco Trade

On November 12, 2012, in Seoul, Republic of Korea, at the Fifth session of the Conference of the Parties of the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the Protocol to eliminate illicit trade in tobacco products was adopted unanimously.

This groundbreaking Protocol builds upon and complements the provisions of Article 15 of the Convention. The Article 8 of the Protocol entitled “Tracking and Tracing” requires Parties to implement track and trace systems, and mandates clear specifications on what a compliant system should achieve.

As a leader in secure traceability solutions for governments, SICPA has developed an affordable, tested and modular system that fully meets these requirements.
